Quiet 16 L with a laundry mode

Bosch Dry 4000

Short answer: if you want a quiet, well-made machine for a heated home, the Dry 4000 is Bosch’s 16 L compressor with Auto, Night and Laundry modes. The catch: the 2.5 L tank is small for a heavy washing week unless you use the hose.

If you want a quiet machine for a heated home, the Dry 4000 is Bosch’s 16 L compressor. Bosch says it removes up to 16 litres a day in rooms up to about 33 m², and it publishes a noise figure of 38 dB(A). That’s at the quiet end for this size, which matters if it’s going in your bedroom in winter.

You get three automatic modes. Auto adjusts to the humidity you’ve set, Night keeps noise to a minimum, and Laundry is there for washing on an airer. There’s overflow protection with a warning and automatic shut-off, and you can run a drain hose instead of emptying the tank. It weighs 11.1 kg, with a built-in handle and castors.

Here’s the catch: the tank holds 2.5 litres. That’s fine for keeping condensation down in a heated flat, but if you’re drying a full airer most days, you’ll be emptying it a lot unless you set up the hose. Bosch’s product page also doesn’t give a wattage, so it’s harder to work out what it’ll cost you to run.

If you want the biggest tank for laundry, we’d compare it with the Pro Breeze 20L. And if you want a published table showing what it pulls at 20 °C, the MeacoDry Arete One 12L or 20L are the ones to look at.

Published specification

Extraction figures and room sizes are what the maker claims, and they’re often measured at a warm, humid lab point. Your rooms in the UK are usually cooler, so that’s a lower real take. We haven’t run our own lab tests.

  • Bosch publishes 38 dB(A), which is at the quiet end for this size
  • Night mode keeps noise to a minimum, and Laundry mode is built in
  • Overflow protection with a warning and automatic shut-off

Weak points on paper

  • 2.5 L tank is small next to the 4–5.5 L tanks on 20 L rivals
  • Bosch’s product page doesn’t give a wattage, so running costs are harder to judge
  • The HEPA and carbon filter is an extra
